CULTURAL IMMERSIONOne of the central themes to our mission is honoring -and sharing- indigenous wisdom. It is our belief that society as a whole desperately needs exposure to indigenous beliefs, values and ways of life if there is to be healing and ultimately, reconciliation. Multiple times a year our Lakota friends travel to the Denver metro area to share their culture and wisdom. Whether during these trips or when volunteer groups are on Pine Ridge, the Lakota join us to share traditional songs around the drum -often accompanied by dancers in full regalia. They teach about the meaning behind songs and dances which represent stories, prayers and celebrations. Elders speak of the history, language and Lakota beliefs. Native youth share about their life on the reservation today and artists demonstrate their craft and talk about the imagery in their art. Lakota guides join our groups on Pine Ridge for hikes and horse rides and Lakota families often join us to share a meal and play games with our volunteers at base camp.

Supporting Lakota Artists
Lakota arts and crafts reflect their rich cultural heritage and remain an important aspect of their Lakota identify. Artists are invited to visit our volunteer groups when on Pine Ridge to display their art, conduct live demonstrations as well as teach the history and significance around their chosen medium. Bead-work, quill-work, paintings, jewelry and moccasins are some of the art forms that are shared. Supporting these artists through purchasing their art is an important part of their livelihood on the reservation. |
